Intertextuality in Kemal Varol’s Stories and Novels Self-References

Abstract

Forming their novels, novelists can adopt different sources according to the content of the novel. When there is a historical event in the background of what is told in the novel, history books are the main works that the author exploits. For novels with religious, philosophical, sociological or psychological contexts, books in related disciplines are among the resources to be utilized. A story, a poem or an essay depending on the context of the work may also be included in the books either directly or indirectly. The author, forming the novel, can also use his own works as well as applying to the works written in different fields and various people. In this context, he makes references to his own texts. Persons or events in a novel can be seen in another novel or story of the author. This feature exists in the works of Kemal Varol as well. Considering the novels and stories of the author, it is seen that self-references take place in works with varying intensity. In this study, Kemal Varol’s three published novels Jar, Haw, and Ucunda Olum Var and Sahiden Hikâye were studied and it has been tried to determine how the self-references, a method of intertextuality, takes place in the works. Every character, every events were studied in all works and the aspects of common fictions were presented. Furthermore, the depth in these novels and stories has been explained by means of interpreting how these uses can contribute to the contents, contexts and plots of the works. According to the findings, it has been understood that the writer has employed this method in his every work. Varol has used intertextuality method, taking advantage of the common period and place and has referred to his own works. In this context, characters and plots have intertwined in various works.
